MURAL: Panama

Dec 2017

Panama Mural Project was a beautification project developed by and for the young people of the Panama Community in partnership with Te Taha Awa - Riverside Community Centre. All concepts for this mural were developed and delivered with the help of our 3 local interns Kylie, Sione & Tumaia and their friends in the local neighbourhood. AUAT's purpose is to expand urban contemporary arts experiences for youth through the weaving of arts education, artistic excellence, cultural respect & integrity. All design processes were derived from learning and sharing the rich cultural landscapes & histories of Te Wai ō Taiki (Panama), it's surrounding maunga Maungarei (Mt Wellington) and Te Tahuhu ki te rangi (Otāhuhu - or Mt Richmond). With AUAT at the lead, we were able to gain first-hand experience as both artists and arts managers. We look forward to our future in helping navigate future creatives, communities and youth and by curating and connecting these worlds to encourage cultural safe practise in the Urban Contemporary Arts.

Thanks to all those who had a hand in this very special project and last but not least Thomas Rawiri of Te Taha Awa - Riverside Community Centre, Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board, Resene Color Shop (Mt Wellington), Burgerfuel & Safeway Scaffolding NZ.
